What is an AI voice plugin?

The missing piece in modern vocal production

An AI voice plugin is a VST3/AU effect that replaces or transforms a vocal signal using a deep-learning model trained on a real artist's voice. Unlike pitch correction tools (which adjust notes) or vocoders (which modulate timbre algorithmically), an AI voice plugin maps your input voice directly onto a trained model — changing the character, texture, and identity of the sound in real time.

The result is a full vocal conversion: your performance, their voice. Producers use this to audition how a track would sound with different vocalists, to pitch-correct while matching a reference artist's tone, or to build fully synthetic vocal performances from scratch using MIDI-triggered voice models.

Until recently, this required expensive per-session licensing deals or exporting to cloud-based web tools with upload limits and processing queues. DAW-native AI voice changers change that equation entirely — the processing happens locally, latency is under 50ms, and it works inside your existing production environment like any other insert effect.

The category is exploding: producers are replacing guide vocal placeholders with AI models, remixers are getting licensed stems through voice synthesis, and film composers are prototyping ADR replacements before booking studio time. The AI vocal plugin has become a core production tool — and the race to build the best one is well underway.

The consent problem

Why ethical AI voice tech is the only AI voice tech worth using

Most AI voice tools were trained by scraping the internet — pulling from YouTube, SoundCloud, podcast archives, and streaming platforms without notifying, compensating, or asking permission from the artists whose voices were used. This is the current state of the industry: powerful tools built on unlicensed data.

The legal exposure this creates is not theoretical. Multiple pending lawsuits from major artists against AI voice companies are working through the courts right now. Labels are tracking which tools use licensed vs. scraped data. Sync licensing desks are starting to ask. Distributors are beginning to add clauses.

How it works

Up and running in four steps

01

Download and install

Download the MicDrop installer for macOS or Windows. VST3, AU, and AAX plugins install automatically to the standard plugin directories your DAW already scans.

02

Load in your DAW

Rescan plugins in Logic, Ableton, FL Studio, or Pro Tools. MicDrop appears in your effects browser under the MicDrop category. Insert it on any vocal or instrument track.

03

Select a voice model

Browse the 80+ artist voice library inside the plugin UI. Audition models in real time while your track is playing. Adjust conversion intensity, formant shift, and vibrato controls.

04

Produce

Record directly through the converted voice, or process existing takes. The output is a standard audio signal — export, bounce, and deliver exactly like any other plugin in your chain.
